Schools and Colleges
Welcome to the Education area for Tameside Safeguarding Children website.
Schools offer so much more than learning. Through the partnership we are here to assist and ensure settings are fulfilling their statutory requirements in relation to safeguarding. We aim to support with guidance, information, resources and documents. This section will be updated and reviewed to provide relevant information.
New child friendly version : Working together to Safeguard Children
The DfE has published a version of Working Together to Safeguard Children for children and young people. This illustrated guide uses simple language to explain how different people and organisations work together to help, support and protect children.
Please share with the young people you support.
Why should schools share the illustrated guide with children and parents?
- Raises Awareness: It helps children understand what safeguarding means and that it’s normal and important for adults to work together to keep them safe.
- Explains Processes Clearly: It explains in simple language what happens when concerns are raised, making safeguarding feel less scary and confusing.
- Supports Children: Children learn they have rights — to be listened to, respected, protected, and involved in decisions regarding their care.
- Helps Build Trust: It builds trust between children and adults by showing that safeguarding is about care, not punishment.
- Promotes Support: If children recognise that support is available early, they are more likely to share if they feel unsafe or worried.

Education Settings Self-Assessment Tool (Section175) & Guidance
It is essential that all schools and colleges in Tameside can demonstrate they are meeting the key statutory duties and follow the guidance for safeguarding children and young people.
Section 175 of the 2002 Education Act required local education authorities and the governing bodies of maintained schools and FE colleges to make arrangements to ensure that their functions are carried out with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
Section 157 of the 2002 Education Act and the Independent School Regulations 2003 convey the same responsibilities on all other non-maintained settings.
Stephen Mills Tameside Education Safeguarding lead will be hosting Teams events on 3rd and 4th December that will give an Overview of 175 Audit for 2023 to 2024.
